Frequently asked questions
Can I opt for an alternative to HSA?
At present, HSA is a crucial component in IVF media for successful embryo development. Although recombinant alternatives were considered, they are not widely used due to insufficient data on efficacy compared to natural HSA.
In a validations study conducted at Fertility Associates in 2016, HSA outperformed SSS (synthetic serum replacement) in terms of embryo utilisation rate (2/3rds of cases had more blastocysts with HSA vs SSS).
Some IVF media incorporate other protein sources, including α and β globulins. However, these alternatives may increase ammonium levels, potentially affecting blastocyst quality, gene expression, and pregnancy outcomes.
Is it possible to use HSA from my own blood?
Unfortunately, this is not feasible due to complex regulatory and technical constraints.
Can the HSA in my IVF media guarantee it is free from mRNA?
While absolute guarantees are not feasible in biological systems, stringent testing standards minimise any risk of residual mRNA. The HSA used is derived from thoroughly screened blood donations and follows rigorous purification processes.
